BIOGRAPHY
Curtis Hanson began his career by launching a magazine dedicated to the seventh art, simply titled Cinema . Initially a screenwriter, the American began directing in 1972 with a small independent horror film, Sweet Kill .
After films with modest budgets (including American Teenagers in 1983, with a debutant Tom Cruise ), Curtis Hanson saw his career take off with his induction into the Directors Guild, under the sponsorship of Samuel Fuller , Don Siegel and John Cassavetes . The thrillers Faux Témoin and Bad influence followed , then the film which revealed him internationally: La Main sur le cradle , Grand Prix at the Cognac Police Festival.
From then on, Curtis Hanson enjoyed a reputation that allowed him to make the right career choices at the right times. In 1994, he directed the adventure film The Wild River then garnered critical acclaim with LA Confidential , an adaptation of a novel by James Ellroy and a winning artistic counterpoint for the filmmaker. Supreme award: the screenplay, which he wrote himself, won the Oscar in 1998. In 2000
, he directed the comedy-drama Wonder Boys with Michael Douglas and Tobey Maguire , a film once again nominated for an Oscar. for Best Screenplay, before revealing the fragilities of the controversial rapper Eminem in 8 Mile , a film (loosely) based on the star’s beginnings in the city of Detroit. Five years later he made a 180° turn in the company of Cameron Diaz and Toni Collette , to whom he offered two strong roles as antagonistic sisters in the romantic comedy In her shoes .
After filming Eric Bana and Drew Barrymorre around poker tables in Lucky You , in 2006, Curtis Hanson became more discreet. In 2012, he directed the feature film Chasing Mavericks , diving into the world of surfing with Gerard Butler in the lead.
