Dabney Wharton Coleman was born in Austin, Texas on January 3, 1932 to his parents Mary Wharton and Melvin Randolph Coleman. Dabney was fascinated by the military as he was popular with young men of his day. So he joined the Virginia Military Institute in 1949 before being admitted to the University of Texas, where he received his law degree. In 1953 he was finally drafted into the United States Army. He served in Europe during his tenure.

Dabney’s acting career began in the 1960s after he trained with Sanford Meisner at New York’s Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theater from 1958 to 1960. His earliest roles were in the cinema with The Slender Thread (1965) and Downhill Racer (1969). He then appeared on television with a role in This Girl (1966).
