Danny DeVito was born Daniel Michael DeVito Jr. on November 17, 1944 in Neptune, New Jersey but grew up in Asbury Park, New Jersey. His parents were Italian immigrants originally from San Fele in Basilicata. DeVito’s father, Daniel Sr., was a businessman who ventured into various businesses, including a dry cleaning company and a restaurant.
DeVito attended private schools as an adult and even did a play or two in high school, although he wasn’t really considering an acting career at the time. After graduating from Oratory Prep School in 1962, he enrolled at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1966.
The young aspiring actor continued to appear in several theatrical productions, including an appearance with his future wife, Rhea Perlman, in a play by Westbeth Playwright’s Feminist Collective. He landed his first film role in the film Dreams of Glass However, the film proved to be a disappointment for him and he decided to focus on theater productions. A year later, he appeared in the off-Broadway debut of The Man with a Flower in His Mouth, followed by roles in The Shrinking Bride and The Statue of Liberty.
