BIOGRAPHY
Daveed Diggs was born in the city of Oakland, California, in the United States, in 1982. After high school, he studied theater at Brown University in Providence (Rhode Island), where he graduated in 2004. Daveed made his acting debut on stage before devoting himself to music. With his childhood friend Rafael Casal , he released his first songs in 2010 before joining the rap/hip-hop group Clipping in 2012.
The actor then began on television in 2015 by starring in popular TV series like New York Special Unit . It was the same year that Diggs’ talent exploded in America’s eyes. The actor makes a big splash in the musical Hamilton, on Broadway. The show evoking the life of the Founding Father of the USA, Alexander Hamilton, is a true triumph, winning eleven Tony Awards in 2016. Daveed Diggs slipped into the shoes of the Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson. For his performance, he was awarded a Grammy for the soundtrack and a Tony Award for best actor in a musical.
The doors to the small and big screen will then open more easily for Daveed. He is notably seen in the Netflix series The Get Down , a series set in the rubble of the South Bronx. We follow a group of lost teenagers with no future who can only count on themselves and have as their only weapons in the face of life their verbal jousting, their improvised dance steps, and a few big markers and bombs of paint.
After this experience, the actor took a turn in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt before taking his first steps in the cinema in Wonder . In this drama, Jacob Tremblay plays a little boy born with a facial malformation which has until now prevented him from going to school normally. Diggs plays the character of Mr. Browne.
The actor then joined the cast of the series Black-ish in the shoes of Johan Johnson. The show notably mixes themes of family and racism, through the character of Andre Johnson. African-American, he deplores that the values of his cultural identity have been gradually diluted in society. His very liberal wife and his very old-fashioned father have a hard time understanding him, not to mention his children.
These themes, dear to Daveed Diggs, are at the heart of his first leading role in a feature film. Since the mid-2000s, Diggs and his accomplice, Rafael Casal, have been writing the screenplay for Blindspotting, hoping one day to be able to bring it to the cinema. The two friends had the idea of highlighting their hometown of Oakland, which they believe is too little represented on the big screen. The project therefore saw the light of day in 2018 with Diggs and Casal in the lead roles.
The film notably addresses the themes of gentrification, police violence and racism through the story of two childhood friends, Collin and Miles. W hen Collin witnesses a terrible police blunder, it is a real shock for the young man. He will then have no other choice but to question himself in order to make a new start. We will soon see Diggs in the series Snowpiercer , adaptation of the graphic novel Le Transperceneige.
