Education
Being born to Orthodox Jewish parents (dati) has its own expectations. For David, his parents wanted him to be ordained as a rabbi or cantor (semikhah), which led him to regularly spend time in Israel during his youth. And that would also reflect on his upbringing; he attended a number of Jewish day schools, including the Wisconsin Institute for Torah Study in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Valley Torah High School, Los Angeles, Fasman Yeshiva High School, Chicago, in Illinois.
David, however, had his own plans. He didn’t want to limit himself to the rigorous religious standards, rules and requirements of schools, instead he chose to be a normal teenager. He was expelled from three of the schools he attended and left the fourth of his own free will. David formed his first band during his years at one of these schools – Valley Torah High School, in Los Angeles, California.
Although he resented his study in these schools, he later encouraged his family to observe the Jewish day of rest also known as Shabbat or Sabbath and then train as a hazzan (cantor, who leads the Jewish congregation in prayer).
despite his high school rebellion, he was a good student and has good grades to show for it. He graduated from Ida Crown Jewish Academy in Chicago, Illinois in 1991, marking the end of his high school career. During the following year, after his graduation, David Draiman was in Israel to study at Yeshivas Neveh Zion in Kiryat Ye’arim, on the outskirts of Jerusalem. According to him, he wanted to examine religion on his own and decide what he wanted to believe and what he didn’t.
Upon his return to the United States in 1992, he showed a real thirst for knowledge and enrolled in pre-law studies at Loyola University in Chicago where he specialized in the fields of political science, business philosophy and management. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1996.
He worked as a bank teller and in telephone sales while in college. After graduating, David worked as an administrative assistant in a healthcare facility. After his first year of work, he obtained an administrator’s license and opened his own health facility. He worked as a health care administrator for five years and was considering law school before making camp with the band Disturbed.
David’s Music Career
From his time as a cantor he has some vocal training which he used to the full in his later years as a singer. He began to take an interest in music while he was in school in Los Angeles. He did it with a punk rock band consisting of Ramones, Sex Pistols and several originals. In an interview with Metal Hammer, he said that Disturbed was the seventh band of the band he joined.
He became the leader of the band and is known for his distinctive rhythmic vocal character and percussive singing style. Disturbed released five studio albums, most of which topped 200 on Billboard before going on hiatus in 2011.
After their hiatus, David collaborated with Device’s Geno Lenardo on an industrial rock/metal project. He would later become the singer of the group Device. However, Disturbed reunited in 2015 and released their sixth studio album, Immortalized
While most of the other band members will focus on the genre of music they profess, David Draiman is an exception. It also draws inspiration from other genres.
