His parents welcomed him on April 18, 1968 in Redhill, a town in the boroughs of Reigate and Banstead in Surrey, England. His family, however, moved to Canada when he was four.
Shortly after arriving in Toronto, David was enrolled in a high school in the city, where he first explored the possibility of acting. He went on to appear in several films at his school exceeding his own expectations.
The British-born Canadian star dropped out of school in his final year after finding out he was supposed to be an actor and a computer whiz.

David’s love of computing dates back to his teenage years in Toronto, where he glued himself to the machine for hours. At the time, he was so interested in the machine that he declared himself a computer nerd.
After leaving school to pursue acting and computing, Hewlett started a web development company, ‘Darkly Media’. He also created an Internet community called “Fusefilm.com” for filmmakers.

While David’s marriage to Soo (also called sue) did not produce a child, he shares a son (Sebastian Flynn Loughman Hewlett) with Jane Loughman.
