BIOGRAPHY
As a child, Dean Martin, who was still called Dino Crocetti, didn’t like school very much. He leaves her before the second year to do various odd jobs such as clerk or shoe shiner. At 17, he started singing under the pseudonym that would never leave him again. His qualities as a “showman” and entertainer please the public, and he achieves great success in this direction with the titles “That’s amore” or “Volare”. During a gala, he meets Jerry Lewis , a young comic beginner, who will offer him the opportunity to work in cinema.
Together, they made a dozen films, the first of which was My Good Friend Irma (1949), directed by George Marshall . The duo’s recipe? Martin the tender romantic, and Lewis the perfect imbecile. Their successes, all comedies, are called En route pour Bali , Le Cabotin et son compère or Ce n’est pas une vie . In 1956, tired of the “Martin and Lewis” duo, and feeling that his comrade was gaining the upper hand over him, Dean Martin left the adventure and launched his own career. After successful films under the direction of Vincente Minnelli ( Comme un torrent ) or Edward Dmytryk ( Le bal des maudits ), he toured alongside John Wayne for Rio Bravo , in which his performance as an alcoholic sheriff’s deputy was praised by all. Howard Hawks ‘ film really launched the crooner-actor’s “serious” career.
At the end of the 1950s, Dean Martin formed the “Rat Pack” with his singer friends Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. , a group of friends who worked together. At the cinema, they will participate in films like The Stranger from Las Vegas , Four from Texas or The Three Sergeants . It was also during this period that he created his production company Meadway-Claude Productions Company . The separation of the Rat Pack a few years later did not prevent Dean Martin from shining on the big screen with Kiss Me, Stupid by Billy Wilder or The Four Sons by Katie Elder . The latter allowed Martin, in addition to his reunion with John Wayne , to be awarded the Bronze Wrangler at the Western Heritage Awards of 1965.
From 1965 to 1975, Dean Martin became rarer in the cinema to devote himself more to singing and the small screen. His show The Dean Martin show is a hit with audiences, and the triumph of records like “Everybody loves somebody” or “Gentle on my mind” mark the return of the Dean Martin singer. During this period, he can be seen in theaters three times in the role of Matt Helm , in parodies of James Bond. He also plays in films with more dramatic registers such as Airport by George Seaton . His last film, Cannonball 2 , was released in 1984. Subsequently, Dean Martin returned to television and singing until his death.
