Emmerson Mnangagwa Biography

Mnangagwa – also known as “Ngwena” (a totem name for a crocodile) or “ED”, after his initials, a Zimbabwean politician born 15 September 1942 in the southwestern district of Zvishavana. Emmerson was born one of six children in the family of Mafidhi and Mhurai Mnangagwa and belongs to the Karanga ethnic group, the largest sub-group of the Shona majority in Zimbabwe.

Like his parents, who were politically active farmers, Emmerson was an active politician from a young age. His grandfather was a traditional leader. Likewise, his father was a political agitator who fought for black emancipation during colonial rule. It’s safe to say that it picked up where its biological predecessors left off.

Ruthless politician

After Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980, Mnangagwa held a number of high-profile positions at Mugabe before becoming his vice president in December 2014. For example, he became Zimbabwe’s first Minister of National Security while Robert Mugabe became Prime Minister. When Mugabe became president in 1988, Emmerson was appointed Minister for Justice, Law and Parliamentary Affairs. He was also briefly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and Finance.

Previous historical accounts still link him to the conspiracy and execution of the “Gukurahundi” massacre, an attack that crushed opponents of the ruling party in the 1980s.

In 2000, Emmerson received a seat in Parliament as the Speaker after he contested a seat in Parliament. Despite claiming to be a Christian now, Mnangagwa is still the old hard biscuit he always was. He lost his position as secretary of the ruling party in 2004 for openly and barely campaigning for the vice presidential post.

The stone Mnangagwa is a man of few words with strong military connections. After his sacking as Vice President on November 6, 2017, the tough politician vowed to challenge Mugabe’s authoritarian leadership. He then fled the country, saying his life was threatened.

The veteran, who has been one of Mugabe’s longest-serving allies, accused Mugabe of using the ruling ZANU-PF party as his private property. On November 19, 2017, Emmerson was appointed leader of the ruling ZANU-PF party. He is also said to have mastered the planned coup in which Mugabe became president. Mugabe even accused Mnangagwa of using witchcraft against him.

On November 21, 2017 under great pressure,Mugabe resigned paving the way for Emmerson Mnangagwa to become President of the Republic of Zimbabwe. He was sworn in as the third President of Zimbabwe on November 24, 2017.

According to sources, Mnangagwa has close business ties with Colonel Lionel Dyck, a white officer in the old Rhodesian army who founded the army Mine Tech , a landmine clearance company that secured lucrative contracts from the Zimbabwean government to clear landmines in Zimbabwean border areas after the war. He is also said to have made a lot of money when he was finance secretary in Zanu-PF.
