The talented actress was born on September 12, 1986 in New York City as Emmanuelle Gray Rossum to a mother of Russian Jewish ancestry and a father of Anglo-Dutch ancestry. Emmy was raised alone by her mother, Cheryl Rossum (a corporate photographer). She only had the chance to see her father a few times. Rossum considers herself Jewish.
She loved the arts from an early age and had a lot of support from her mother. At the age of seven, Emmy auditioned for the Metropolitan Opera and was successful. This allowed her to embark on an acting career. Over the next few months, she performed in no less than 20 operas in six different languages. She soon stopped performing at the opera because she had outgrown to perform as an artist. At the age of 15, Emmy earned an online high school diploma from Stanford University and later enrolled full-time at Columbia University, where she studied the history of the art and French.
Rossum made her television appearance in 1997 with Abigail Williams in the sensational soap opera As the World Turns. She was in Snoops as a guest actor and then starred in the ABC television movie, The Audrey Hepburn Story as Audrey Hepburn. Her first film began in the year 2000 at the age of 13, she played the role of Deladis Slocumb in Songcatcher. Singer who won the Special Jury Prize for Outstanding Ensemble Performance also earned Rossum a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for First Performance. This film also allowed him to sing a duet with country music star Dolly Parton.
In 2000, she was named by Variety magazine as one of Ten to Watch. Since then, Rossum has appeared in countless movies and TV series including I Had to Be You, Grace & Glorie, An American Rhapsody, Nola, The Practice, An American Rhapsody among others.
Rossum soon ventured into music and it was a huge hit. Her debut album titled Inside Out was released on October 23, 2007 and reached the US Charts at 199. In December of the same year, she released three more songs (Christmas songs) on the record. Song of the bells. In 2013, Rossum released the album Voyage sentimental under Warner Bros. The album did better than her debut album, peaking at 92 on the US Charts.
