Burnett was born Erin Isabelle Burnett on July 2, 1976, in Mardela Springs, Maryland, where she was raised on a farm on the east coast of the Chesapeake Bay by her parents; Esther Margaret (née Stewart) and Kenneth King Burnett, corporate lawyer. Erin is the youngest daughter of her parents and has two older sisters, Mara and Laurie. Raised as a Catholic, Erin’s ethnicity has been attributed to Scotland and Ireland.

For her high school education, Erin left home and moved to Middletown, Delaware, where she attends a preparatory boarding school called “St. Andrew’s School”. She graduated in 1994.
