He has directed three plays, three feature films and a documentary. He got his start in the industry when he was cast in the 1985 sci-fi film, Explorers The movie also starred River Phoenix, Jason Presson and Amanda Peterson. While Explorers was a great start, his breakthrough came when he was cast in the 1989 drama Dead Poets Society – which also starred Robin Williams in one of his most acclaimed roles.

Ethan Green Hawke was born on November 6, 1970 in Austin, Texas to his father, James, who was an insurance actuary, while his mother, Leslie, was a social worker. His parents were high school sweethearts who married at an early age. His mother was only seventeen when he married and Ethan was born only a year later.
At the time of his birth, his parents were students at the University of Texas at Austin. Unfortunately, his parents divorced when Ethan was only four years old, in 1974; after which, Ethan was primarily raised by his mother. The pair moved around a bit before settling in New York City, where he attended Packer Collegiate Institute, located in Brooklyn Heights. His mother, Leslie, remarried when she was ten and the family had to move to New Jersey, where Ethan then attended West Windsor Plainsboro High School, which was renamed West Windsor-Plainsboro High School in 1997. . After which he transferred to the Hun School of Princeton, a boarding school from which he graduated in 1988.
Acting and writing have always been two of Ethan’s greatest passions and from an early age he made a decision to pursue his passions. He made his debut in a theatrical performance at school.
