George Herbert Walker Bush was born on June 12, 1924 in Prescott Bush and Dorothy Walker Bush in Milton, Massachusetts.

The family moved to Greenwich, Connecticut where he attended Greenwich Country Day School. He then attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, where he demonstrated outstanding leadership abilities both in the classroom and on the sports field.

His plans to go to college were cut short when the United States entered World War II in December 1941. George Bush, then 18, enlisted in the United States Navy, making him the most young navy pilot at that time. While serving in the US Navy during World War II, George Bush had his plane shot down over the Pacific Ocean. Fortunately, he was rescued from Japanese forces by the famous rescue submarine USS Finback

On January 6, 1945, George Bush married his wife of 73 years, Barbara Bush (née Pierce). When World War II ended in September 1945, he quickly resumed his studies and enrolled at Yale University. George Bush Sr. was the captain of his varsity baseball team during his senior year at Yale. It was fitting to meet the legendary American baseball player Babe Ruth a few weeks before the latter’s death in August 1948.

The marriage between George WH Bush and Barbara Bush was the longest presidential marriage in United States history. The couple had a total of 6 children together – George W. Bush Jnr. (born in 1946), Robin Bush (1949-1953), Jeb Bush Sr. (born in 1953), Neil Mallon Bush (born in 1955), Marvin Pierce Bush (born in 1956) and Dorothy Walker Bush (born in 1959). Tragically, the Bush family lost their daughter Robin Bush when she was 3 years old. She died of complications from leukemia a few weeks before her fourth birthday. In his honor, the Bush family established the Bright Star Foundation to help raise awareness about this disease.
