BIOGRAPHY
Originally from New York, Harold Becker graduated in art history from the Pratt Institute, a prestigious school of design and architecture. After making numerous documentaries, short films and commercials, Harold Becker left the United States to settle in England. It was in this country that he shot his first feature film, The Ragman’s daughter , in 1972. Presented at the Venice Film Festival, the film, which follows a couple of criminals on the run, enjoyed some critical and public success in Great Britain. -Brittany.
It took Harold Becker seven years to return behind the camera for a second time for a feature film. Based on a novel by Joseph Wambaugh, who entrusted its production to Harold Becker after seeing The Ragman’s Daughter, Cop Killer , made in 1979 with James Woods in the lead, established Harold Becker in a genre that he would rarely leave : film noir. In 1981 , Taps was released , a virulent critique of the functioning of American military academies. In 1988, it was the turn of American society and the reign of money to take on their ranks in State of Shock where James Woods and Sean Young played a rich couple who descended into drugs.
In 1989 Harold Becker scored one of his most important critical successes with the thriller Melody for Murder , which follows the troubled realization between detective Al Pacino and his suspect Ellen Barkin . Mystery continues with Malice (1993) which brings together Bill Pullman and Nicole Kidman , then at the start of his American career, a couple too perfect to be happy.
After becoming interested in political shenanigans in 1996 in City Hall , which allowed him to find Al Pacino, Harold Becker shot Code Mercury , a banal psychological thriller which nevertheless benefits from the presence of star Bruce Willis . In 2002, the filmmaker continued his psychological thriller with The Intruder , which brought together John Travolta and Vince Vaughn .
