Heidi Cruz was born Heidi Suzanne Nelson in San Luis Obispo, California, USA on August 7, 1972 to her parents Peter Christian Nelson, a dentist, and Suzanne Jane, a dental assistant. She had her childhood experiences in various countries, including Nigeria, Kenya and Asia, as a result of uniting her parents’ missionary work with the Seventh-day Adventist Protestant denomination. Heidi Cruz has a brother named Scott Nelson and is a graduate of Valley View Adventist Academy in Arroyo Grande, California before completing her undergraduate education in 1990 at Monterey Bay Academy in La Selva Beach, California.
Soon after graduating from Monterey Bay in 1994, she graduated from Claremont McKenna College with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and International Relations. During her studies, Cruz also attended the University of Strasbourg. In addition, she continued her studies by enrolling at the Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management in Brussels, Belgium.
