He was born Howard Moses Matthew Long on January 6, 1960. Howie’s place of birth is Somerville, Massachusetts but he was raised in Charlestown, Boston, both in the United States. Howie’s parents, Margaret and Howard Long, divorced when he was a child. His mother, who suffered from epilepsy, could not raise him alone, so he lived with his grandmother and uncles who helped him raise him.
After completing his elementary and middle school, Lange returned to Massachusetts where he attended Milford High School. At Milford he was an all-around sports star, competing in football, basketball and track events (including javelin, shot put and discus) for three years. Howie, who didn’t start playing soccer until he was fifteen, got so good at the game during high school that he was even called up to the Scholastic Coach All-America team as a senior.
After high school, Howie Long enrolled at Villanova University in Radnor, Pennsylvania, where he joined the college football team and received the letters throughout his four years of college. Howie Long began his professional football career with the Oakland Raiders (now Los Angeles Raiders), who started him at No. 48 in the second round of the 1981 NFL draft. For the Raiders, Howie played as a defensive end wearing jersey number 75.
After retiring, Howie Long ventured into acting, primarily with action films. Some of the works in which he has appeared are Broken Arrow (1996), That What You Do! (1996), Firestorm (1998), Dollars for the Dead (1998) and 3000 Miles to Graceland (2001).
