Howie Long is an American sports analyst, actor, and retired professional soccer player. As a football player, Howie played for the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders as a defensive end. Outside of sports broadcasting, Long works for Fox Network and Fox Sports as an NFL analyst and columnist.

He was born Howard Moses Matthew Long on January 6, 1960. Howie’s place of birth is Somerville, Massachusetts but he was raised in Charlestown, Boston, both in the United States. Howie’s parents, Margaret and Howard Long, divorced when he was a child. His mother, who suffered from epilepsy, could not raise him alone, so he lived with his grandmother and uncles who helped him raise him.
After completing his elementary and middle school, Lange returned to Massachusetts where he attended Milford High School. At Milford he was an all-around sports star, competing in football, basketball and track events (including javelin, shot put and discus) for three years. Howie, who didn’t start playing soccer until he was fifteen, got so good at the game during high school that he was even called up to the Scholastic Coach All-America team as a senior.
After high school, Howie Long enrolled at Villanova University in Radnor, Pennsylvania, where he joined the college football team and received the letters throughout his four years of college. In addition to football, Long also competed in boxing, emerging as the Northern Collegiate Heavyweight Boxing Champion at Villanova. He graduated in 1981 with a degree in communications.
Professional soccer career
Howie Long began his professional football career with the Oakland Raiders (now Los Angeles Raiders), who started him at No. 48 in the second round of the 1981 NFL draft. For the Raiders, Howie played as a defensive end wearing jersey number 75.
After retiring, Howie Long ventured into acting, primarily with action films. Some of the works in which he has appeared are Broken Arrow (1996), That What You Do! (1996), Firestorm (1998), Dollars for the Dead (1998) and 3000 Miles to Graceland (2001).
In addition to acting, Long tried his hands in broadcasting and works as an NFL Coverage Studio Analyst at Fox Network. Howie Long started a family in 1982, marrying Diane Adonizio on June 27. Howie met his future wife in the late 1970s while they were both studying at the University of Villanova. Along with Diane, Howie has three sons – Christopher Howard Long (born March 28, 1985), Kyle Howard Long (born December 5, 1988), and Howard Long Jr. (born 1990).
All three sons of Howie Long are actively involved in football. His first son, known simply as Chris Long, played for the Philadelphia Eagles as a defensive end. Chris retired from professional football on May 18, 2019. He married Megan O’Malley in 2013 and they have one son, Waylon James Long. Howie’s second son, Kyle Long, plays for the Chicago Bears as an offensive guard. Kyle eventually transitioned to a baseball career and was drafted by the White Sox after high school. However, he didn’t sign the deal and instead returned to football. The third and final son, Howie Jr., decided to take a slightly different path. He works as a personal assistant with the Oakland Raiders and as a premium sales consultant with Legends.
