Hugh Beaumont Biography

He was born Eugene Hugh Beaumont in Lawrence,Kansas, USA on February 16, 1909 to Ethel Adaline Whitney and Edward H. Beaumont. He was of French descent and grew up in a devout Methodist family. His father worked as a traveling salesman, a job that kept his family on the move. He was very athletic and played football in college, but also had good acting skills.

Beaumont graduated from Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tennessee, after which he enrolled at the University of Chattanooga, where he played football until his position on the team was changed. With the change he went to the University of Southern California, where he completed his Master of Theology in 1946. Although he pursued a successful acting career, he remained employed as a lay minister throughout his acting career.

In 1931, he began his career in show business, appearing in theaters, nightclubs and on the radio. Nonetheless, he switched to films in 1940 and soon his resume was filled with amazing roles and incredible versatility. Hugh Beaumont appeared in many films during the 1940s, although many of his roles were part and supporting and therefore uncredited.

Between 1946 and 1947, Beaumont took on the role of what would become one of his most famous characters, Lloyd Nolan’s fictional private investigator Michael Shayne, appearing as such in five films. They include Murder Is My Business (1946), Theft in Her Heart (1946), Blonde for a Day (1946), Three on One Card and Too Many Winners in 1947.

In the 1950s he explored roles in both television and films as an actor and storyteller. He narrated the short film Ein Date mit dein Familie (1950) and from 1952 to 1953 he was the narrator of the series Thug Squad He played Reverend Randy Roberts in an episode of The Lone Ranger that was more consistent with his real-life personality than his role as an ex-convict in a 1953 episode of Adventures of Superman

Before landing his most famous role as boss of the Cleaver clan, Ward Cleaver on the hit sitcom Leave It to the Beaver in 1957, he acted in West ‘s Night Passage, playing a sympathetic version of western bandit Jesse James in stories from Wells Fargo Until production ended and the series went into syndication in 1963, Hugh Beaumont starred in, wrote and directed several episodes of the series, including the final episode. Family scrapbook In the June 2004 issue, TV Guide ranked his character #28 on its list of the 50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time.

Hugh Beaumont died on May 14, 1982 in Munich, Germany while visiting his son Hunter. His cause of death was given as a heart attack. His body was cremated and the ashes scattered on the then-family-owned island on Lake Wabana, Minnesota. The 1983 TV movie Still the Beaver is dedicated to Beaumont.
