Mrs. Smith was born Jada Koren Pinkett on September 18, 1971, in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, she is named after her mother’s favorite soap opera actress, Jada Rowland. Growing up in Baltimore, Jada attended the School of the Arts in Baltimore where she majored in dance and acting. She graduated in 1989. She then went on to study at the North Carolina School of the Arts, before moving to Los Angeles for acting.

Jada started acting in 1990 when she starred in an episode of True Colours, before appearing in a television pilot for a drama titled Moe’s World which never aired. After that, the starlet received guest roles on television shows such as Doogie Howser, MD (1991) and 21 Jump Street (1991) and had a role in the NBC television comedy about comedian Bill Cosby, A Different World in 1991 as college freshman Lena James.

In 1993 she landed her first film role – Society Menace II – and in 1994 she starred with Keenen Ivory Wayans in the action film, A Dirty Shame. Following a role in Demon Knight (1995), Jada co-starred with actor and comedian Eddie Murphy in the 1996 science fiction film, The Nutty Professor. Next, she had a role in Turning It Off (1996) with Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox and Kimberly Elise.

In 1997, she had a role in Scream 2 as Maureen Evans, a college student who is brutally murdered in front of hundreds of onlookers. In 2000, Pinkett starred in the Spike Lee film Bamboo (2000), as Sloan Hopkins. The film won the National Board of Review’s Freedom of Speech Award.

In 2002, Jada Smith formed metal band WickedWisdom under the stage name Jada Koren with Pocket Honore, Cameron Graves and Rio as band members. She then worked with the human rebels Niobé in the films, The Matrix Reloaded (2003) and The Matrix Revolutions (2003), following 1999’s The Matrix. The character was said to have been written specifically for Pinkett Smith.

Jada was the voice of Gloria the hippopotamus in the popular 2005 animated film, Madagascar and its sequels. Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (2008) and Madagascar III: Europe’s Most Wanted (2012).
