BIOGRAPHY
Jeffrey Michael Tambor was born on July 8, 1944 in San Francisco, California, United States. Tambor is a graduate of San Francisco State University, where he studied acting and later received a master’s degree from Wayne State University.
He made a strong dramatic impression in his film debut Justice for All (1979), in which he played Al Pacino’s crazed partner. He continued to improve in a series of films such as The Dream Chasers (1984), Mr. Mom (1983), Brenda Starr (1989), Radioland Murders (1994), Doctor Dolittle (1998) and Pollock (2000).
He was nominated two years in a row for an Emmy and a SAG Award for his role in the award-winning comedy Family Sacrifices . He had previously been nominated for four Emmy Awards for the series The Larry Sanders Show , which ran for six seasons, and for a Daytime Emmy for providing his voice to the animated comedy The Lionhearts .
On television he has played small roles in the series Welcome to the Captain , Twenty Good Years , with John Lithgow, and Mr. Sunshine . He has been a guest artist on CSI, Law & Order, The Adventures of Christine, The Price of Duty, LA Law, Studio 5B, Tales from the Crypt, Max Headroom and the acclaimed animated series WordGirl.
He returned to the stage in 2005 for the staging of Glengarry Glen Ross , with Alan Alda and Liev Schreiber. In February 2014, Amazon premiered its original series Transparent , which starred Tambor as Maura Pfefferman (born Morton Pfefferman), a transgender, divorced, Jewish mother of three. Tambor won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy, and also won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance.
