BIOGRAPHY
Coming from a family of artists, Joanna Kulig was passionate about acting, music and singing from a very young age. At 16, she gained attention by participating in the Polish talent show Szansa na sukces , in which she finished third. She would try her luck again four years later, in 2002, in another singing competition, Idol .
A graduate of the Ludwik-Solski National Higher Theater School in Krakow, she made her screen debut in 2006 in the series Pensjonat Pod Róza . It was mainly on television that she continued her career until 2011, where she shot several feature films, including Elles with Juliette Binoche , and La Femme du Vème by Pawel Pawlikowski . This co-production between France, Poland and the United Kingdom allows him to star alongside Ethan Hawke and Kristin Scott Thomas , while marking the beginning of his collaboration with Pawlikowski.
It is thanks to the latter that she is noticed beyond the borders of her native Poland. He then gave her a supporting role in Ida (2013), winner of the Oscar for best foreign film, then the leading female role in Cold War , winner of the Best Director Award at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. In the latter, she plays a singer who experiences an impossible love with a musician during the Cold War.
She also shines in Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013), a horrific rereading of the famous tale; the drama Les Innocentes (2015), inspired by a tragic news item; the Netflix musical miniseries The Eddy (2020); or the Hanna series (since 2019), adapted from the eponymous film by Joe Wright . In 2022, she is starring in Kompromat , a political thriller in which she comes to the aid of a French expatriate who is the victim of a scheme orchestrated by the Russian secret services.
