BIOGRAPHY
Son of a psychotherapist mother and a documentary filmmaker father, Joe Alwyn has two brothers. In his childhood and adolescence, he played football and rugby, but above all, he was passionate about theater. Thus, after high school, he joined the prestigious National Youth Theatre, from which he graduated in 2009, then the University of Bristol and the Central School of Speech and Drama. The young Londoner plays in numerous plays and goes through casting calls.
For his first film role, Joe starts off strong as he is chosen by Ang Lee to play the main character in A Day in the Life of Billy Lynn (2017). In this military fresco, he portrays Billy Lynn, a young 19-year-old Texan who is part of an infantry regiment in Iraq who is the victim of a violent attack. Having survived, he is made a hero. And it is with this status that he is repatriated to the United States to parade, before returning to the front…
Building on this success, Joe Alwyn continues with the drama In the Time of Memories , the thrillers Operation Finale and Boy Erased , followed by three period films: The Favourite , Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots and Harriet . He then took part in a fantasy miniseries based on Charles Dickens ‘ 1843 novel of the same name , A Christmas Carol , and appeared in Joanna Hogg ‘s The Souvenir – Part II , part of a melancholic diptych about a story of love. Choosing his projects carefully, Joe stars opposite Shailene Woodley in the romantic drama The Last Letter from Her Lover (2021). He plays one of the two main characters of Stars At Noon , an adaptation by Claire Denis of the novel by Denis Johnson . The filmmaker confides: “I admired him as a soldier in A Day in the Life of Billy Lynn. We spoke by Zoom one Friday and without hesitation, we felt the desire to work together.” Not forgetting the little window, Joe plays one of the key characters in Conversations with Friends , a series adapted from a work by the novelist Sally Rooney ( Normal People ). He plays the dark Nick Conway. Note that he also composed and wrote around a hundred pieces for his partner Taylor Swift ! Laurent Schenck
