Jon Dorenbos Father/Parents

Jonathan Paul Dorenbos was born on July 21, 1980 in Humble, Texas and was raised in Woodinville, Washington by his parents, Kathy and Alan Dorenbos. He grew up with two siblings, Krissy and Randy.

On August 2, 1992, when Jon was 12 years old, tragedy struck his family when his father killed his mother. According to the story, Jon was home alone as his sister Krissy traveled to California to visit their grandparents and brother Randy at basketball camp.

Alan had pushed his wife Kathy down a flight of stairs after a heated argument, after which he cleaned up the crime scene, painted the garage before hiding her body in the trunk of their car. When Jon, who was playing in the neighborhood, came over and asked his dad after mom, he lied about where she was saying she was out with friends. However, guilt got the better of him as he surrendered the following day.

Jon’s father was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to 13 years and 8 months in prison. However, he only served 11 years and was released in 2004.

According to reports, Jon alongside his siblings has not contacted their father since his release except for when they confronted him in prison following a therapist’s suggestions. However, Jon said he had forgiven his father since he turned twenty.

Jon explained to the media that he is guilty that if he forgives his father, it is like abandoning his mother and choosing his father. However, he said he overcame that thought after realizing that his mother would rather he live a happy and productive life and help others. Jon says forgiving his father was the best thing he ever did.

Facts

After the death of his mother and the conviction of his father, Jon, lived briefly in foster care before his aunt, Susan Hindman, his younger sister, obtained custody of him and his siblings and moved with them at her home in Garden Grove, California.

Susan who was a single woman at the time took care of her nephew Jon as if she were her own. Jon attended Pacifica High School where he was a letter clerk in baseball, basketball, football, and hockey. However, no sport could bring him the solace he found in magic. Jon has repeatedly revealed that magic saved his life and helped him deal with his mother’s passing.

Despite his love for sports, Jon as a teenager aspired to one day become a professional magician. Fortunately, her new family, including her grandparents, supported her dreams. Susan even asked her friend Ken Sands, a professional magician, to entrust her with her tutelage, to become her mentor and reveal secrets about the craft.

Jon held on to those secrets as he is today, a professional magician who has demonstrated his skills in large venues, including Las Vegas and Hollywood, and even in smaller venues such as the locker room, treating his teammates to a carnival. During his auditions for the eleventh season of America’s Got Talent, he received the gold horn from singer-songwriter Ne-Yo. Click here to watch his auditions.
