Jordan Belfort (aka Jordan Ross Belfort) was born on July 9, 1962 in Queens, New York to Jewish parents (Max and Leah), both of whom were accountants. Although Belfort earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from American University, his natural talent as a salesman blossomed.
By his early twenties, Belfort was in sales and his instincts drove him to run the meat and seafood business door-to-door on Long Island. That was in the 1980s. He tried a different field when he entered the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. But he resigned soon after his first day of college when the dean spat out what Belfort saw as bone-chilling advice on dentistry that had no future.

Jordan Belfort soon intervened in stocks. With the help of a family friend, he secured a job as a trainee stockbroker at L. F. Rothschild . However, he was fired soon after the firm ran into financial difficulties related to the 1987 black money market crash. Belfort persisted and in 1989 ran his own investment firm, Stratton Oakmont Art of Stock Sales.

His addiction to Quaaludes contributed to the crash of his second marriage. Things finally went awry for the rich man when the law began to take notice of his dubious plans. In 1992, the Securities and Exchange Commission redoubled its efforts to combat fraudulent activity that was causing Stratton Oakmont to rake in stinking revenues. Also, the National Association of Securities Dealers barred Stratton Oakmont from membership, and the company was ordered into liquidation in 1996 to pay the fines.
