Katherine Kiernan Maria Mulgrew was born in Dubuque, Iowa, United States on April 29, 1955. She was born to Thomas James Mulgrew, an entrepreneur, and Joan Virginia, a painter and artist. The Mulgrew family is a large family with a total of eight children, of which Kate is the oldest.
