The first woman to anchor PGA Tour coverage, Kelly Tilghman is one of the biggest names in sports broadcasting. A media personality, she rose to fame for her work on The Golf Channel. The highly talented broadcaster has been with The Golf Channel since its inception and remained there for many years before parting ways for good in 2018.

Kelly Tilghman – Biography

Kelly Tilghman was born on August 6, 1989 in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. It was here that she was raised as the only girl in a family of five children of which she was also the eldest.

Tilghman was raised by her parents, Phil and Kathryn Tilghman. Aside from both of his parents’ involvement in golf, his father served as mayor of North Myrtle Beach, a position he held for 14 years, while also a businessman. Her mother had a career in media sales and was also a professional shag dancer who was inducted into the Dance Hall of Fame.

Her love for golf is something that has been a part of her life since she was little, as it is the sport that her family is attached to. She was raised primarily on the golf course at Gator Hole, which was owned by her family for more than two decades, spanning from 1980 to 2002. Her father drove her around the golf course as she grew up.

With that, she was already prepared for a long time before she even decided that she was going to get into the sport. What’s more, Melvin Hemphill, who was his grandfather, was also a coach in the same sport. There are other family members including Kathryn Hemphill who was his great aunt and his mother who also played golf at some level.

Kelly Tilghman sneaking out with her brothers to play until dark. But more than even golf, she also loved basketball when she was still growing up and she also played soccer. However, she would always return to golf, which she would describe as a solitary sport, as she was encouraged by her father who thought that was where her talent lay.

Tilghman is so talented in acting that she later received a scholarship to Duke University, where she continued to perform. However, she was easily distracted from the sport but soon found her way back. She received a bachelor’s degree in political science and history from the university upon graduation.

By then, she was already tired of golf, so she later got different jobs, including as an assistant basketball coach and at the McCormick Ranch golf club.

She then returned to golf but left even though many were willing to give her money. Her rise to fame began in 1995 when she started working with The Golf Channel and continued until 2018.
