Kim Novak was born on February 13, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois. She came from a middle-class American family and was raised by her parents, Blanche and her husband, Joseph Novak. Her father, a historian, worked as a freight dispatcher in Chicago and the St. Paul Railroad, while her mother worked in a factory. She grew up in a central Catholic setting and her parents are both of Czech ethnicity. During her youth, Kim attended William Penn Elementary School before going to Farragut High School.
Shortly after graduating from Farragut High, Kim enrolled at Wright Junior College where she participated in various theatrical productions organized by the school. Surprisingly, her magnificent performances won her a scholarship to attend the School of Art Institute in Chicago. In her freshman year, Kim started modeling for a refrigerator company. While touring Los Angeles with the company, she entered the Miss Deepfreeze beauty pageant. She was then invited to play a minor role in a film.
