Laura Elizabeth Dern was born on February 10, 1967, in Santa Monica, Los Angeles County, California. Her mother Diane Ladd and her father Bruce Dern are both actors. Her parents’ marriage broke up when she was 2 years old, after which she was raised by her mother and grandmother.

Laura Dern had her college education at the University of California, Los Angeles, after which she also studied at the Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute. She marked her debut in the action film White Lightning (1973) with her mother. Dern appeared in a few minor roles afterward and eventually landed her first major role in the 1982 film Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Spots. She also recorded notable roles in films like Mask (1985), Blue Velvet (1986) and The Heart That Is in Desert (1990).
