BIOGRAPHY
Born in Brooklyn but growing up in Queens, Lauren Velez came from a large family and dreamed of becoming an actress from an early age. After training in theater, she played Inspector Nina Moreno in the police series New York Undercover , which lasted from 1994 to 1999. At the same time, the actress was chosen in 1997 to play one of the main characters in an HBO series which becomes cult, Oz .

In this very violent prison series, she slips into the shoes of a dedicated nurse working in the terrible penitentiary, and who has a love/hate relationship with the charismatic inmate Ryan O’Reilly.

Following this notable character and after the end of the series in 2003, Lauren made several appearances on television and in 2006 found her third major role, that of police lieutenant Maria LaGuerta in the very lucrative series Dexter worn by Michael C. Hall as the serial killer. For the occasion, the actress reunites with David Zayas , Erik King and Scott William Winters , three characters from Oz.

At the same time, the actress appears in Numb3rs and Ugly Betty . Then, we see her, always on the small window side, in South of Hell and especially Murder , in the role of the President of the university from season 3. In the cinema, she plays in Windows on the World , American Nightmare 4 , Swallow , Shaft and Hostage Game . She also lends her voice to one of the characters in Spider-Man: New Generation .

In 2019, Lauren reprized her character of Detective Nina Moreno in a reboot episode of New York Undercover . She then took part, for four episodes, in Power Book II: Ghost and East New York . In 2023, the Brooklyn native plays the mother of the hero played by Anthony Ramos in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts , reboot of Michael Bay’s lucrative saga and sequel to Bumblebee (2018).
