Marin Elizabeth Hinkle was born in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on March 23, 1966, to American parents (Margaret R. and Rodney Hinkle) who served in the Peace Corps at that time.

Her father is American and her mother is of Italian and Scandinavian descent.
