Biography of Mark Burnett
On July 17, 1960 in London, England, Mark was born to Archie and Jean Burnett, both factory workers at Ford Motors. He was brought up in Dagenham, Essex, in a Christian family. It has not been revealed which primary school he attended, however, we know for sure that at the age of 17, Mark Burnett joined the British Army.
The Briton was dedicated and committed to fulfilling his military duties and showing good leadership qualities, so he became a section commander of the Parachute Regiment. Mark served with the 3rd Battalion, Parachute Regiment in Company C between 1978 and 1982 and as a trained fighter he fired and returned fire in the Falklands War.
In 1982, he emigrated to the country ofopportunity – the United States at the invitation of his friend Nick Hill, who worked as a nanny and driver. Upon her arrival, Nick told her of his plans to open a live-in child care center with the wealthy Beverly Hills-based Jaeger family. Considering that his military training was beneficial for security, he was hired by the Jaegers. He worked there for a year before joining the Burt family in the seaside town of Malibu, California, where he earned $250 a week to care for two boys. Later, he started working in the family’s insurance office and also sold t-shirts on weekends.
Mark then left the insurance and t-shirt business in 1991 to join a French adventure competition called Le Raid Gauloises. A shrewd businessman, he was quick to spot unexplored opportunities and changes that could be made to the show to create more business value. Thus, he acquired the format rights for a similar competition and created Eco-Challenge which as a result launched his career as a television producer.
