Mark Dantonio is a former football coach in college football. In his graduate college days, he played defensive back and earned three letters for the Gamecocks job. The head coach announced his retirement on February 4, 2020 after recording the winningest head coach on the MSU football team.

He had his 14-year stint as head coach for the Michigan State football team after holding the position since the 2007 season. The football coach was born on March 9, 1956, making him 65 years old in 2021. He was born in El Paso, Texas to parents Justin Dantonio and Maryan Dantonio. Also, his grandfather, Frank Dantonio, immigrated to the United States from Montenerodomo, Italy in 1912. He has a United States nationality and is of white ethnicity.

Also, he is the second child of his four children from his parents. When he was one year old, his family moved to Zanesville, Ohio. There, his father worked as an assistant principal and basketball coach at Zanesville High School. Also, Mark attended school and was statewide insurance in Zanesville. He later joined the University of South Carolina and graduated with a Bachelor of Education in 1979. He then received his Master’s degree in 1980 from Ohio University.

During his time at the University of South Carolina, he played defensive back and won three letters under coach Jim Carlen in 1976-78. However, he went from player to coach after joining Ohio University and became a graduate assistant under head coach Earle Bruce for two years. He then transferred to Purdue University as a graduate assistant. After that, in 1986, he had his five-year stint at Youngstown State University as a secondary defensive coach on Jim Tressel’s staff.

He was then named head coach in December 2003 for Cincinnati through 2006 and led the team to a bowl game win and led the team’s transition to the Big East Conference. Since 2007, he has served as the 24th head coach for the state of Michigan until the date he announced his retirement on February 4, 2020.
