Biography of Maxine Waters

Maxine Waters was born on August 15, 1938 in St. Louis, Missouri to her parents, Remus and Velma Lee Carr Moore. She was born the fifth child of their thirteen children. At the age of two, her father left the family and Maxine was raised alone by her mother.

Her full name at the time of her birth was Maxine Moore Carr. She attended Vashon High School in St. Louis, Missouri, and graduated before her family moved in 1961 to Los Angeles, California. Working first in a garment factory and then as a telephone operator, she was later hired as an assistant in Watts’ Head Start program in 1966. Maxine then decided to enroll in California State University, where she eventually earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology..

Maxine Waters has been in and around the political space of the United States for over forty years and continues to go from strength to strength. It all started with her appointment as chief adviser to Councilman David S. Cunningham Jr. in 1973. She also worked there on divestment of state pension funds from companies operating in South Africa then under apartheid. . Maxine would later become Chair of the Assembly’s Democratic Caucus.

In 1990, with over 79% of the popular vote and at least the retirement of Augustus F. Hawkins, Waters was elected to the United States House of Representatives for California’s 29th congressional district. Re-election has been steady for Waters, as the district was renumbered as 35th in 1992 and 43rd in 2012 and winning his seat with at least 70% of the vote.

In 2017, Maxine was rumored to have planned to divorce Sid for infidelity, but when asked about it, Williams denied the allegations. The couple remained married but have no children together.
