Born Michael Jerome Williams, Jr. in 1986, in Denver and Michael Oher, in Memphis (Tennessee, USA), he became an American football forward having played college football at the University of Mississippi. With a remarkable life journey that has taken her through good times and bad, her biography is well worth reading. Michael did not have a typical childhood upbringing. He had to repeat his first and second years as many times as he could remember.
Due to his family issues, Michael at age 7 was placed in foster care and alternated between living in various foster homes and periods of homelessness. By the age of 9, he had taken eleven different courses.
He was later invited by Leigh Anne and Sean Touhyen in 2004 to live with them and their children where they eventually adopted him into their family. Along with his new father, Sean Touhy, a former footballer himself, the family saw fit to hire a tutor for Michael who would train him 20 hours a week.
Michael started his passion for football in his freshman year at his high school. There he went on to apply for admission to Briarcrest Christian School with the support of Tony Henderson. Tony Henderson was an auto mechanic who provided Michael with food and shelter from time to time.
While in college, Michael’s low grades were initially a barrier to his acceptance into an NCAA program. With discipline and courage, he managed to raise his cumulative grade point average (GPA) from 0.76 to a record 2.52 MPG at the end of his senior year.
He then attended a Division I school by enrolling in a 10-day series of Internet courses from Brigham Young University. By taking and passing these courses, Michael was able to replace his Ds and Fs earned in previous classes, such as English, with Aces earned via the Internet.
Receiving football scholarship offers from different colleges, Michael decided to enroll for the University of Mississippi scholarship: where he would play for the Ole Miss Rebels football team.
In 2008, Michael declared he would be entering the 2008 NFL Draft. However, Michael announced his withdrawal from the draft two days later to return to Ole Miss for his senior season.
At the end of the 2008 season, Michael Oher became recognized as a unanimous first-team All-American; Earning the honor roll for the second time (the first time being his sophomore year) and graduating with a degree in criminal justice in the spring of 2009.
Michael Oher has received numerous awards and honors during his college career including but not limited to: 2005 All-American First Freshman, 2005 First Quintal Chrome Player [AQFC] vs. Letius, 2005 First Member from our freshman SEC team, 2008 Shug Jordan Award, 2008 Southeast Offensive Lineman of the Year Col. Earl “Red” Blaik Leadership and Research Fellowship. He is currently a free agent.

His father’s name is Michael Jerome Williams and his mother’s name is Denise Oher. Michael received little care and attention from his father who was often in jail due to his criminal activities. A former cellmate of his mother’s brother, Michael’s father rarely led a pleasant life. He spent most of his childhood in prison. He was allegedly murdered in prison while Michael was still in high school.
His mother, on the other hand, led a tragic life of drug addiction and alcoholism. She was addicted to cocaine and consumed a lot of alcohol. Still alive, Michael’s mother still struggles with her addiction and still tries to stay away as she navigates her way to recovery. Michael Oher’s adoptive mother – Leigh Anne Tuohy – was the catalyst for most of the progress in Micheals life.
Michael Oher’s new parents helped transform him from a lost nomadic teenager to a force on the football field that eventually led him to the NFL.
Michael comes from a large family of 14, including father and mother. He is one of his mother’s twelve children. Through his adoptive parents, he has a sister called Collins Tuohy: a popular actress and public speaker. Likewise, he has a brother named Sean Tuohy Jr. who is the assistant head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks football team.
