Marian is popularly known as the “First Grandmother” and many of you may not know this but she lived in the White House with the former First Family throughout their tenure. She was the first resident grandmother there since Elivera M. Doud, Mamie Eisenhower’s mother, during the Eisenhower administration.

Her name is Marian Lois Robinson, but she was born Marian Shields on July 30, 1937 in Chicago. Hers was a large family since she was the fourth of seven children; five girls and two boys, born to Purnell Nathaniel Shields, a house painter, and his wife Rebecca Jumper, a licensed practical nurse.

She married Michelle’s father Fraser Robinson on October 27, 1960 in Chicago, where they both had extended families. Sadly, he passed away on March 6, 1991. Besides being the mother of Michelle Obama, Marian became popular when she became the resident grandmother of the White House.

She lived on the third floor of the White House, and although she works behind the scenes, her presence is essential to the well-being of the first family. She was recruited to be the surrogate mother of Malia, then 10, and Sasha, 7, as her parents cared for the needs of the nation as a whole.

Michelle Obama’s mother was an integral part of the first family and worked behind the scenes to ensure the Obamas represented America to the best of their abilities.
