Neil Alden Armstrong was born in 1930 on August 5 in the town of Wapakoneta, Ohio. He was the first of his parents’ three children. Her father served as an auditor for the state government of Ohio, and as a result, the family resided in different parts of the states at different times, and lived in 16 cities in 14 years. For Armstrong, who had already developed an interest in flying at the age of 2, these frequent trips enthused him even more.

The family ended up settling when he was born in the town of Wapakoneta when he was a teenager and while there he attended Blume High School and also took flying lessons at Wapakoneta Airfield. He received his student flight certificate on his 16th birthday. The following year, 17-year-old Armstrong enrolled at Purdue University to study aeronautical engineering. His college education was funded by the US Navy under the famous “Holloway Plan”. As part of the plan’s requirements, he completed two years of flight training after his first two years in college. He became a Navy aviator at the age of 20, after which he served two years (1950-1952) in the United States Navy before returning to Purdue University to complete his bachelor’s degree.

Neil Armstrong was among nine astronauts commissioned by NASA in September 1962. This marks the start of a highly successful career during which he recorded several unique achievements. In March 1966, he made his first trip to space when he commanded the Gemini 8 spaceflight. In doing so, he became the second civilian astronaut to fly in space after Joe Walker, who had done so in 1963 The high point of Armstrong’s career was reached in July 1969 when he led the Apollo 11 mission and also became the first man to walk on. the moon alongside his teammate Buzz Aldrin. Armstrong’s historic first step on the surface of the moon was broadcast live on television for worldwide audiences.

After retiring from NASA in 1971, Neil Armstrong was a professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Cincinnati, a position he held until 1979. The couple had 3 children together. Their first son Eric was born in 1957, their second son Mark was born in 1963 and their only daughter Karen was born in 1959. Their union ended in divorce in 1994.

After his divorce from Janet Shearon, Neil Armstrong married Carol Held Knight. They remained inseparable until Armstrong’s death on August 25, 2012.

Karen Armstrong was the name of Neil Armstrong’s only daughter. Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in June 1961 when she was only 2 years old. She received X-ray treatment to remove the tumor, but it damaged her health. She eventually died of pneumonia following the weakening of her immunity on January 28, 1962.
