Patrick Duffy was born on March 17, 1949 in Townsend, Montana, he was raised in Washington from the age of 12. After his years at Cascade High School, Duffy, who aspired to be a professional athlete, knew he wanted to become an actor. As a member of the school drama club, he performed in many plays.

He was admitted to study at the professional section of the Actors Training Program at the University of Washington, Seattle. Duffy graduated in theater in 1971. Patrick Duffy was born to tavern owners, Marie and Terence Duffy. Unfortunately, tragedy struck the Duffys in 1986 when two teenagers tried to rob their tavern in Boulder, Montana and murdered Duffy’s parents. The boys were found guilty and sentenced to 75 years in prison. One of the boys, Miller, who later admitted to being the sole shooter in the robbery, was released on parole in December 2007.

Patrick Duffy was married to Carlyn Rosser who was 10 years older than him from 1974 until his death in 2017. Duffy first met his wife on a bus around the same time he was working in Washington as a performer for ballet, opera and orchestra companies.

At the time, Carlyn was a ballet dancer with the New York Premier Chamber Dance Company. She had started her acting career before switching to classical dance from the age of 14. Carlyn would introduce Duffy to Buddhism, a religion he has come to practice his entire life. Their wedding took place on February 15.

Their marriage produced two sons. Padraic TerenceDuffy born in 1974 and Conor Frederick Duffy born in 1979. The family lived near Eagle Point, Oregon. They have four grandchildren. Duffy’s wife died on January 23, 2017. After Duffy’s career and the show Dallas was in decline after Duffy’s character was murdered in 1985, it was his wife Carlyn who suggested that the 1985–86 season be a dream to explain Duffy’s return to 1986.
