Patrick Lavon Mahomes II was born in Tyler, Texas. Mahomes grew up in the east town and attended Whitehouse High School where he was interested in football, basketball and baseball. He finished high school as a three-star football recruit and was ranked twelfth in his class for double threats. Despite his love of baseball, he chose football, which is why he chose Texas Tech University.

Mahomes joined Texas Tech as a backup of his teammates during his freshman season but was later made the starter. While running the yards on the football field and hitting touchdowns, he created time for the school’s baseball team to act as a relief pitcher. During his freshman and sophomore seasons (2014-2015), he played in 20 games and rushed for 6,200 yards with 52 touchdowns and 19 interceptions.
In 2016, he decided to leave the baseball team and focus on football for the entire offseason.
