The Rae Sremmurd is an American hip-hop/rap duo made up of real-life brothers Aaquil and Khalif Brown, better known by their stage names “Slim Jxmmi” and “Swae Lee,” respectively. The band’s name is derived from the label “EarDrummers”, with each word written on the back.

Their 2014 hit No Flex Zone produced by Mike Will Made-It created so much buzz and was remixed by rap luminaries such as Lil Kim and Nicki Minaj. The duo is currently signed to Mike Will Made-It’s EarDrummers Entertainment.

Aaquil Iben Shamon Brown akSlim Jxmmi was born on December 29, 1993 while his brother Khalif Malik Ibn Shaman Brown aak Swa Lee was born on June 7, 1995. Both were born in Inglewood, California. Their mother, Bernadette Walker worked with the army and their father left when the boys were quite young.

Due to her work with the military, their mother deployed to different states, which caused the family to move several times. From California, they moved to Mississippi, then to Maryland, before the family settled permanently at the military post of Fort Hood, Texas.

When their mother left the military, the family moved back to Mississippi to join his new wife, Floyd Sullivan. The boys moved in with their new stepfather in the infamous Ida Street housing project in Tupelo. Their stepfather sold medicine to help the family and keep the boys in school.

They started making music at their mother’s house while he was still in high school, writing their own songs and making their own beats. They were part of a three-man group dubbed ‘Dem Outta St8 Boyz’. At this point, they were getting noticed in their locality, showing up at birthdays and shows. However, that didn’t translate into money for the boys, it was a job that didn’t require a lot of money.

The boys didn’t know much about their father and so their mother Bernadette and brother Michael were the only family they had. Their mother remarried after leaving the army. Thus, they had a father figure in their stepfather, Floyd Sullivan. However, their mother’s second marriage ended in divorce after a few years, again leaving the boys with only one parent.

When they started working on their music career while still in high school, it took up so much of their time that they started skipping school. Their mother was so frustrated with their lifestyle and kicked her boys out.

The brothers were forced into abandoned buildings while working dead-end jobs just to keep their music going. Spreading their music on the internet gave them the required exposure and landed the duo the subject of the first “Wild Out Wednesdays” segment of BET’s Countdown to 106th & Park show.
