Robert De Niro Facts/Bio
Robert Anthony De Niro was born August 17, 1943, in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, New York, to paint parents who divorced when he was just 2 years old. His passion for acting developed quite early and he started taking free acting lessons through his mother’s employment at Maria Piscator’s Dramatic Workshop.
Rob attended many high schools but did not graduate from one, choosing instead to pursue a career in acting. With the support of his mother, Robert attended Lee Strasberg’s Actors Studio, where he honed his acting skills.
He started auditioning for roles in the 1960s and his first film would be The Wedding Party for which he won $50. Over the years, Niro’s chances of becoming a star have increased. The turning point in his career came when he won acclaim for his role in Bang the Drum Slowly. It then became a fixture in Martin Scorsese films, starting with Mean Streets.
His role as a young Vito Corleone in Francis Ford’s The Godfather II by Coppola became his starring role, earning him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. The rest, as they say, is history. Niro credits his ability to effectively portray Italian gangster and other related roles to his teenage years when he was part of a rather innocuous Italian street gang.
