The retired American broadcaster was born on February 9, 1928, in Washington, DC, the capital of the United States. His full name is Roger Harrison Mudd, born to a tobacco farmer’s son and a farmer’s daughter. Her father, John Kostka Dominic Mudd, worked as a cartographer for the United States Geological Survey, while her mother, Irma Iris Harrison, served in the country as a lieutenant in the US Army Nursing Corps. Her parents met in the physical therapy department of Walter Reed Hospital, where her mother also served.

As expected, Roger Mudd is amply educated. He completed his high school education at Woodrow Wilson High School and earned his BA from Washington and Lee University in 1950, after which he earned an MA from the University of North Carolina in 1953. He also took a semester at the University of Richmond Law School, but was unable to continue.

He began his journalism career in Richmond, Virginia, reporting for The Richmond News Leader, as well as radio station WRNL. It was 1953 and he was a huge contributor to the first News Leader story with a byline on June 19, 1953. He was on the daily midday newscast on WRNL radio and later landed his own daily show, Virginia Headlines.

In the late 1950s, Roger Mudd moved to Washington, where he got a job as a reporter for WTOP News, a local news service that also covered national stories. While at the television station, he conducted his first studio interview with his guest, Dorothy Counts, who was racially harassed at her all-white high school in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Coincidentally, CBS News was in the same place as the media giant caught the eye and was hired in 1961. For most of his time at CBS News, Roger Mudd served as Congressional Correspondent. He also anchored the Saturday edition of CBS Evening News, also filled several other roles and conducted interviews. He cemented his position as a top political reporter after conducting Senator Ted Kennedy’s popular interview for a CBS Reports special on November 4, 1979.

Roger’s time at CBS News ended in 1980 after Dan Rather was given the title of CBS Evening News, evening, weeknight reporter, which Roger also sought. He then joined NBC News, co-anchoring the NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw. He also co-hosted the NBC program Meet the Press with Marvin Kalb, as well as co-anchored with Connie Chung on two NBC news magazines, American Almanac and 1986.

From 1987 to 1992 he worked with PBS and later became a visiting professor at Princeton University and Washington and Lee University. he made the last film from 1992 to 1996. He only married one wife and she was named Emma Jeanne Spears Mudd of Richmond, Virginia. Sadly, his wife passed away in 2011, leaving behind her husband and their four children. Their children are Daniel, Jonathan Mudd, Maria Mudd Ruth and Matthew Mudd and they are doing very well in their various fields. Roger Mudd is also the grandfather of at least eleven grandchildren.
