Eddi-Rue McClanahan was born on February 21, 1934 in Healdton, Oklahoma, United States of America. The ancestors of the Edi-Rue go back to Ireland. Her mother was DredaRheua-Nell Medaris McClanahan while her father William Edwin Bill McClanahan was a building contractor.

She was raised in Ardmore, California, where she also attended Ardmore High School. She took an active part in the school games and even won a gold medal for her efforts. Eddi-Rue McClanahan graduated from the University of Tulsa with a degree in arts in 1956, majoring in German and drama courses.

Immediately after graduation she startedwork as a professional actress in small stage productions. Edi joined Kapa Alpha Sorority and also served as the organization’s Vice President. From there she appeared as a lifetime member of the Actors Studio. Here she made her stage debut at the Erie Playhouse in Pennsylvania in the play Inherit the Wind before going on to make her mark on the Broadways.
