Russell Wilson has been a Super Bowl Champion, a trailblazer in the NFL since 2012. Though initially rejected early in his career, the Seattle Seahawks quarterback was fortunate that size didn’t matter to some teams. With his dynamic leadership and athletic ability, he eventually rose to become one of the Seahawks’ most admired players and one of the highest-paid players in the league. Here are interesting facts about the quarterback’s career and personal life.

Russell Wilson’s biography

A native of Ohio, Russell Carrington was born Wilson on November 29, 1988. Although Wilson was born in Cincinnati, he was raised in Richmond, Virginia. Given that Wilson comes from a very athletic family, it came as no surprise that he developed an interest in sports from an early age. When he was in high school, Russell played football for the Richmond’s Collegiate School baseball, basketball, and football teams at the age of four. He led the school team to a state championship in 2004 and was named conference player of the year as a senior quarterback.

At NC State University, Wilson continued with his excellence and history as the first freshman quarterback to earn all of the ACC first-team honors. But after a falling out with his coach in 2011, Wilson transferred to the University of Wisconsin, where he also had an outstanding senior year. Although Wilson’s athletic ability and track record were undisputed, he was initially considered too short to be drafted into the NFL. However, his breakthrough came in 2012 when he was selected by the Seattle Seahawks as the 75th overall pick in the NFL draft.

In Super Bowl XLVIII, Wilson, who was in his second season in the NFL, led the Seattle Seahawks to a 43-8 win over the Denver Broncos. He also led his team to Super Bowl XLIX the next year, but lost to the New England Patriots. Despite losing his bid for a second championship, Wilson had already established himself as one of the game’s top young players by the start of both Super Bowl games and was the first quarterback to do so in his first three seasons. While the Seahawks were not making their third consecutive Super Bowl appearance, Wilson continued to impress and break great records.

Following his distinguished NFL career record, Wilson has been recognized with multiple awards and accolades including seven-time NFC Offensive Player of the Week, 2012 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month, 2012 Steve Largent Award and 2014 PFWA Good Guy Award.

Besides the NFL, Wilson is also into other lucrative ventures. He is a businessman who owns the Good Man Brand clothing line and enjoys endorsements and deals with well-known brands such as Pepsi, Microsoft, Nike and Duracell.

parents, ethnicity

Russell Wilson is the second of three children born to Tammy Wilson and Harrison Benjamin Wilson III. He has an older brother, Harrison IV, who has honed his athletic ability, and a younger sister, Anna.

The Seahawks QB is of mixed ethnicity as he has both African American and Native American heritage. His father, Harrison, is an attorney and his mother, Tammy, is a legal nurse consultant. Although he eventually decided to pursue a career in law, Wilson’s father was a former NFL draftee who played football and baseball for Dartmouth. Back then, Russell’s grandfather was a two-sport superstar at Kentucky State University.

wife, divorce, girlfriend

Russell Wilson has made two marriage attempts. His first marriage was to Ashton Meem. The couple, who first met in high school, only began dating in college, although Wilson attended North Carolina State University and later the University of Wisconsin while Meem attended the University of Georgia. Despite the distance, love won out for the couple and by 2010 they were engaged. Two years later, in January 2012, they tied the knot in Virginia during the early stages of Wilson’s playing career.

However, the longtime couple, who seemed to be going strong, shocked the NFL community and the world at large when they suddenly filed for divorce in 2014 under unclear circumstances. Wilson and Meem’s union produced no children. Shortly after their divorce, rumors swirled that Russell ended the marriage over an alleged affair Meem was having with Wilson’s teammate, Golden Tate. However, Tate firmly denied the allegations.

Wilson is currently married to American pop princess, Ciara, whom he began dating shortly after his divorce from Meem. Wilson and Ciara, who have been married since July 6, 2016, welcomed their first child together, a daughter named Sienna Princess Wilson who was born on April 28, 2017. Despite their previously failed romantic relationships, Russell and the chart-topping beauty are going strong and have become one of the NFL’s most beloved couples.

Height Weight

Russell Wilson is famous for not measuring up to established NFL league standards and being the shortest quarterback to win a Super Bowl. The former NC State star has an athletic build, stands 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 93 kg. Luckily, while he’s considered one of the shortest quarterbacks in the NFL league, Wilson’s height didn’t cost him his NFL career, as he was eventually drafted after his other athletic and dynamic traits.
