BIOGRAPHY
Sacha Baron Cohen, born to an Israeli mother and a Welsh father, took theater lessons as a teenager during the 1980s. Sent for a year to a kibbutz in Israel, he developed his comedic talents while studying for a diploma. of History at the prestigious University of Cambridge . The Paramount Comedy Channel hired him in 1996 to perform comedic transitions between programs. Two years later, he participated in a British satirical show, The 11 O’clock show , where he played for the first time the character of Ali G.

Ali G is, according to his creator, a young man contaminated by exported values by American society, thinking that to be cool, you just have to imitate your idols. Sacha Baron Cohen achieved immediate success in his country, becoming the star of his own sitcom on Channel 4: Da Ali G show . The series then allowed the actor to become a star in the United States, where Madonna chose him to play her crazy car driver in the music video . The Ali G phenomenon grew to the point that the troublemaker became the hero of his own film in 2002: Ali G.

In 2006, Sacha Baron Cohen once again hit the headlines by bringing to the big screen the adventures of his second favorite character, Borat , a fake reporter from Kazakh television. In the film dedicated to him, Borat travels to the United States to learn cultural lessons for his country… A true satire of anti-Semitism, misogyny and racism in Western societies, the film nevertheless irritates the Kazakh authorities and failed to provoke a diplomatic crisis with the United States.

Building on these strengths, the sirens of Hollywood called on him and he appeared in particular in the comedy Ricky Bobby: king of the circuit , where he played a very particular French pilot and Sweeney Todd by Tim Burton , where he played the role by Adolfo Pirelli, a colorful barber. However, he did not calm down and began filming Brüno , a character that he has been refining since his television show. Following the same principle as for Borat , he sets off to conquer the United States disguised as a gay Austrian journalist causing disaster after disaster. This time he denounces the ambient homophobia and the superficiality of the fashion world, not hesitating to push the limits of provocation.

Without forgetting to make a few appearances on television, we see him once again in the cinema, in 2011,in Hugo Cabret . An adventure film mainly for children, Sacha Baron Cohen plays the much less provocative role of the station master alongside Jude Law and Ben Kingsley . However, he is not leaving writing and production by developing a new film on the same tone as his previous ones with the comedy The Dictator , in which he reunites with his fellow director Larry Charles . Then, he slipped into the skin of the abject Father Thénardier in the musical film Les Miserables by Tom Hooper, with Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway and Amanda Seyfried.

In 2016, the actor formed a duo with Mark Strong in the spy film parody Grimsby – Too Special Agent directed by Frenchman Louis Leterrier , and played the villain of Alice Through the Looking Glass opposite Mia Wasikowska (but, unlike its predecessor in 2010, the blockbuster did not do well in theaters). In 2020, after having tasted the small screen via the series Who Is America? and The Spy , he plays in The Chicago Seven , which looks back on the affair and trial of the Chicago Seven at the end of the 1960s (and for which he competed for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor), as well as as in Borat 2 , still as irreverent a sequel to the cult comedy from 2006.
