Sally Margaret Field was born on November 6 in Pasadena, California. She was the second daughter of parents Margaret Field, who was an actress, and Dryden Field, an Army officer. Field was the second daughter of her parents and she had a brother named Richard Field who was a physicist. She did not have the easiest start in her life after her parents separated in 1950. Also, her mother married a new man, Jack Mahoney.

For her education, Sally went to Portola Middle School and later enrolled at Birmingham High School in Van Nuys. During her school years, Field became interested in extracurricular activities.
