BIOGRAPHY
Salma Hayek began her acting career in 1988 by appearing in telenovelas ( Un nuevo amanecer, Teresa ) in Mexico, her country of origin. Wishing to try her luck in Hollywood, she arrived in Los Angeles in the early 90s and made her first cinematic foray in the drama My Crazy Life (1993), which depicted the difficult daily life of a Hispanic neighborhood. The roles were rare, but in 1995 the young actress had a decisive meeting in the person of Robert Rodriguez , who offered her the chance to be the female star of his neo-western action, Desperado , alongside Antonio Banderas .

She will return to the character of Carolina in 2003 in the sequel, entitled Once Upon a Time in Mexico Desperado 2 . Meanwhile, the actress’s strong Mexican accent made her artistic progress difficult. It is only with the support of Rodriguez , who transforms her in the space of a languid dance into a sensual vampire woman in A Night in Hell (1996) or into an alien nurse in The Faculty (1998), that she succeeds. again to make an impression.

In 1999, things accelerated for the statuesque Salma Hayek, starring in three major films: Dogma , where she plays a libertine muse, Wild Wild West , where she plays a tease singer, and the Franco-American drama Spanish-Mexican No letter for the colonel , thanks to which it achieved great critical success. Appearing in the credits of the experimental Time Code (2000), in 2003 she received her first Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her interpretation of the famous Mexican painter Frida . A project that is dear to her since she is also the producer.

Despite this critical recognition, she then returned to a lighter register by reuniting with Robert Rodriguez for Mission 3D Spy kids 3 (2003), by playing opposite Pierce Brosnan in the action comedy Coup d’explosion (2004) and by forming an explosive duet with Penélope Cruz for the western Bandidas (2005). She is also found as a femme fatale in the thriller Lost Hearts (2006) and as a sexy nurse in the musical Across the Universe (2008).

After conquering the cinema, in 2006 she took on the small screen with Ugly Betty ,. Executive producer of the series, which follows the setbacks of a young woman whose physique is considered unattractive in the fashion world, the actress also makes a few appearances, which earned her an Emmy nomination. The following year, she was named general director of Ventanazul, a production label created with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, with the aim of producing Latin and Spanish American films. In 2009, she married François-Henri Pinault, CEO of the luxury group Kering.

We then meet her mainly in the comic register, as in Friends Forever (2010) and its sequel (2013) where she plays the wife of Adam Sandler , Heavyweight Teacher (2012), Muppets Most Wanted (2014), How To Be A Latin Lover (2017) or the series 30 Rock , worn by Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin . A register that she explores even in animation, by lending her voice to Puss in Boots , The Pirates! Good for Nothing, Bad at Everything (2012) and Sausage Party (2016). However, we see her in front of the camera of authors like Mathieu Demy in the intimate road movie Americano (2011); Oliver Stone , who offered her the role of a formidable drug cartel leader in Savages (2012); and Matteo Garrone in Tale of Tales (2015), a cruel tale where she is a queen obsessed with her desire for a child.

With the exception of Hitman & Bodyguard (2017) and its sequel (2021), most of the films that the actress shot at the end of the 2010s remain unpublished in France or do not receive the honors of a cinema release. Salma Hayek returns to the forefront in 2021 by joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe with The Eternals , a feature film by Chloé Zhao about a group of heroes from the far reaches of the universe.
