Shatta Wale was born on October 17, 1984 to Mr. Charles Mensah and Mrs. Elsie in Accra, Ghana. He was baptized as Charles Nii Armah Mensah. Like all parents, Shatta Wale’s parents had an idea of where they wanted their son to go, and that path led to law, a path that obviously never worked out.
music career
Shatta Wale began writing and recording music from his high school days. He wasn’t allowed to drop out like many other musicians because his parents valued the education highly, but he would pursue music full-time afterward. He was inspired by the formerly popular Ghanaian reggae musician Yoggy-Doggy and initially began his career under the stage name Doggy.
He took a long break and appeared as Shatta Wale in 2013. During an interview, the singer revealed that after consulting God, he decided to rebrand himself as Shatta Wale. Shatta is Jamaican slang for “gangster” while WALE is an abbreviation for “World Alerted Lyrical Entertainer”. In the lull before he wore the stage name, he claimed to be in Jamaica learning the genre of music he now believes rules – dancehall.

Wales’ propensity for controversy began to emerge after the 2013 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA). What made the moment so important? The dancehall musician and producer said he was the eligible nominee for the VGMA Dancehall Artist of the Year award and accused her of giving it up to an undeserving dancehall artist “Kaakie.”
His claims became public when he subsequently released a song titled “Me Need No Awards” in which he dissed the VGMA for their alleged slight. After this whole episode, he declared himself the king of the dance hall in Ghana with a new release entitled “Dancehall King”. A hit that put him in the spotlight.
