David Letterman’s former assistant was born Stephanie Anne Birkitt on January 7, 1975 in Plymouth, New Hampshire. She is the daughter of a dentist and a senior assistant mother. After high school, Stephanie Birkitt went to Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in history and a minor in communications in 1997.

Her media career began after her college years at CBS News intern in 1996. She also worked for 48 Hours and The Last Show the same year. After graduating, Stephanie Birkitt joined the News network as a member of the CBS page program and also worked at 48 Hours as an associate producer on segments for correspondent Erin Moriarty. However, it didn’t take long for her to discover that she wasn’t cut out for the news.
