Biography (Age)

Toby Keith was born Toby Keith Covel in Clinton, Oklahoma on July 8, 1961 to his parents; Hubert K. Covel, Jr. and Carolyn Joan (née Ross). He is the second child of three years. he has an older sister called Tonnie and a younger brother named Tracy. The family moved around a lot as Keith grew up and first lived in Fort Smith, Arkansas for a few years before moving to Moore, Oklahoma.

He attended Highland West Junior High and then Moore High School where he graduated. After playing football in high school, Keith didn’t go straight to college like his peers did back then. He chose instead to go work with his father in the Oklahoman oil fields.

Before going to the oil fields, Keith had already fallen in love with music. He started playing instruments at an early age, owning his first guitar when he was eight years old. He was also inspired by the musicians who played in his grandmother’s club. Keith usually asked to come up to the bandstand to play with the band. The band once gave him a taste of show business after letting him perform on stage after finishing his chores.

Musical career

Keith then formed a band with several of his friends during his high school years, but chose to make a living working in the oil fields rather than actively pursuing a music career at the time. He has reached the level of Director of Operations. His passion for music, while still working in the oil fields, spawned Easy Money Band which Keith and a few of his colleagues and friends came together to form. The band played local bars and were occasionally invited to open larger country music bands.

When Keith found himself out of a job due to the rapid decline of the oil industry in the early 80s, he retreated to his “part-time” music career. He had some success in 1984 when his band was invited to play on the honky tonk circuit in Oklahoma and Texas. He managed to make ends meet but still tried to get a contract. Occasionally, he would travel to Nashville to give his demos in hopes of getting signed.

His big break came in the early ’90s when Mercury’s record executive, Harold Shedd, heard his demo and decided to sign him. Keith signed with Mercury Records and released his self-titled debut album in 1993. Its lead single “Should’ve Been a Cowboy”, which was the most played song of the 1990s, immediately went to number 1 on the Billboard charts. Hot Country Songs. The album produced three more top 5 hits on the national charts and was certified platinum.

Toby Keith has had more success with his follow-up work; “Boomtown” in 1994 (Certified Platinum), “Blue Moon” in 1996 (Certified Platinum) and “Dream Walkin” in 1997 (Certified Gold). Here he teamed up with Sting to record ‘I’m So Happy I Can’t Stop Crying’. The track earned them a Grammy nomination. “How do you love me now?!” Followed in 1999 before “Unleashed”, which featured the hit duet “Beer for My Horses” with Willie Nelson, released in 2002, selling over 3 million copies.

Keith went ahead to try his hand at acting and started his own record label as well as other businesses including a clothing line, bars, grills and restaurants.
