Wendy Jane Crewson was born on May 9, 1956, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. She is the daughter of Robert Binnie Crewson and June Doreen (née Thomas). She has a brother named Brad Crewson and together the two chose to attend John Rennie High School in Pointe Claire, Quebec.

Crewson had fallen in love with acting as a child and had her first acting experience in her 10th year when she starred in The Boyfriend. After graduating from high school, Crewson chose to attend Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Her cousin had graduated from school in 1924, at a time when women weren’t really going to college. Crewson said she was inspired by her cousin’s boldness and decided to choose the school.

At Queens, this actress excelled tremendously. She performed in several school productions and won the Lorne Greene Award for Outstanding Work in Theater. She graduated in 1977 and later moved to London where she attended the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art.
