Vanessa Lynn Williams was born on March 18, 1963, in Bronx, New York to parents who were both music teachers. Given her family’s musical background, it came as no surprise that Vanessa showed an interest in the performing arts from a young age. A natural performer, she also learned to play various instruments such as French horn, piano and violin. Because of her outstanding skills, Vanessa received a Presidential Scholarship in Drama from Carnegie Mellon University. However, she preferred to study musical theater at Syracuse University in New York.

Looking for a bigger platform to showcase her talents, Williams reluctantly decided to try her hand at a pageant and first entered the Miss Greater Syracuse pageant, which she won. Next was the Miss New York pageant, where she also won the crown in 1983. That same year, Vanessa Williams made history when she became the first African American woman to be crowned Miss America. Towards the end of her reign in July 1984, however, Williams was caught in a scandal in which her raunchy photos were made public on PenthouseMagazine. The scandalous photos were taken a few years earlier when Vanessa was working as a photographer’s assistant. After the photographer expressed interest in using Williams as a model and assured her that she was unidentifiable in the photos and that they would never leave the studio, Vanessa jumped at the chance and posed for the photos in compromising positions. But two years later, during her tenure as Miss America, Penthouse Magazine announced that the unauthorized nudes, which Vannessa thought had previously been destroyed, will be published in an upcoming issue. Under pressure from Miss America pageant organizers, media controversy and scrutiny forced Williams to resign as Miss America.
