Born Anna Yuryevna Netrebko on September 18, 1971, in Krasnodar, Krasnodarskiy Kray, RSFSR, USSR, Anna is best known as a Russian soprano opera singer born to a geologist father and a mother who was a communications engineer. Like many talented singers, Anna started singing as a child. In high school, she sang in a traveling musical troupe and also studied piano.
Anna Netrebko really began her career as a singer in the 1990s, after two years of training at a music university, she joined the St. Petersburg State Conservatory (then Leningrad Conservatory). There, she worked as a janitor at the Mariinsky Theater before being discovered by the director of an opera company, Valery Gergiev. She made her debut at the Mariinsky Theater where she played Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro. This was after winning first prize in Russia’s prestigious Mikhail Glinka Vocal Competition in 1993. Although she initially wanted to become an actress, her singing teachers helped her see her beauty as a singer. With the support of her director, Valery Gergiev, whom she considered her mentor, Anna was able to play several leading roles with the Kirov Opera, so much so that she was given the main role, Susanna. In 1995, Netrebko made her US debut, taking the lead role of Lyudmila in a production of San Francisco Opera, Glinka’s Ruslan and Lyudmila. After a successful singing career, Netrebko became a frequent guest singer in San Francisco as she was also known for performing other Russian opera roles, such as Louisa in The Engagement in a Monastery, Natasha in Prokofiev ‘s War and Peace and Marfa in The Tsar’s Bride
In the 2000s, Anna played several roles with several operas. She made her Metropolitan Opera debut at the Met’s premiere of War and Peace, sang her first Donna Anna in the production of Don Giovanni, performed as Violetta in Verdi ‘s La Traviata in Munich, and took the title role in Lucia . di Lammermoor at the Los Angeles Opera and so many others. During this period, she released her first album, Opera Arias. Anna’s second album, Semper Libera was released in 2004. Thus, she was named “Musician of the Year 2008” by Musical America magazine.
